Sometimes you just can't avoid referring to 'black people' and 'white people'. Even if you don't want to, other people do, and you can't report what they are doing unless you make this kind of reference. So anyway, I hereby announce that from henceforth, my personal style will be to always put the words 'black','white' and 'race' (except when quoting, or if it refers to anything other than people) in inverted commas. If the subs want to change it, they're welcome. I haven't read the Rhodes style guide about it, and probably should, but I do know that it isn't standard practice in SA journalism. I think it should be. This shaite ain't going to go away unless someone actually does something about it.
This is all prompted by me writing this 'how to do a BA' academic development story, which has lots of 'race' issues.
